What to Love About ……Protecting your Skin? #notjustforsummer

If there’s one thing that my mother and grandmother have taught me since I was old enough to listen (and undoubtedly before) it’s to look after your skin and in particular the skin on your face.

You really don’t get a second chance when it comes to skin damage and ignoring advice in our youth will lead to regret when the visual signs begin to appear in the coming years.

Fortunately, these days we all have plenty of information about sun protection and how exposure to the sun’s harmful UVA & UVB rays are the main cause of premature skin aging, hyperpigmentation and even skin cancer.

There’s no refuting that sun exposure in moderation is beneficial, great for the metabolism and a natural source of Vitamin D. We also need to remember that facial skin is different from other parts of the body, it’s a lot thinner, more sensitive and is constantly uncovered and exposed to the elements.

UV radiation is always present, winter as well as summer, cloudy days as well as sunny ones and as such facial sun protection should be as important a part of your daily skincare routine as cleansing, toning and moisturising.

So, here’s what I use – Eucerin SPF 50+ Mattifying Facial Sun Fluid http://www.eucerin.co.uk/products/sun-protection/sun-fluid-mattifying-spf50plus#details

I particularly like Eucerin as its light, non-greasy and absorbs fully into the skin, so I find that it combines well with my regular skincare products. Some sunscreen products that I’ve tried can leave an oily residue; not a great look!

Sunscreen, should be the final part of your morning routine, so I cleanse, tone and moisturise (for years I’ve been a fan of Liz Earle’s award-winning 3-step Hot Cloth Cleanse & Polish http://uk.lizearle.com/cleanse-and-polish……reminder to me… must review that too!) before applying Eucerin.

Facial sunscreen can be used as a substitution for your normal day cream, but you may prefer to use it in addition, especially if you have particularly dry skin that craves the extra hydration. Time permitting, I always like to leave several minutes in between “moisturiser – sunscreen” and “moisturiser-makeup” to really let it absorb properly into my skin.

I’ve found that prices differ by several pounds between various high street retailers and online sites, but for good value I usually shop on Amazon UK and expect to pay around £11-£12 for 50ml.

If, like me, you’re also interested in the science bit, Dr Steven Wang, Head of Dermatology at one of the world’s top Cancer research centres, The Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, wrote an excellent article a couple of years ago explaining the relationship between UVA/UVB radiation and skin cancer and how the damage actually occurs – “How does sunscreen shield your skin with science?”

Here’s the link for those of you who are interested.

What to Love About ……. Being Different? A Tribute to The Late Sophie Lancaster

As Sophie Lancaster’s 10th anniversary approaches this Summer, it’s important to never forget the discrimination and intolerance that lead to her death, simply for being different.

So, in Remembrance of Sophie, I include a brief synopsis of events taken directly from the Illamasqua page http://www.illamasqua.com/s-o-p-h-i-e

Illamasqua, have a range of products to promote and raise money for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation http://www.sophielancasterfoundation.com with donations from certain products named in Sophie’s memory going to the Charity.

Read more about The Foundation’s work on their website and follow them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/thesophielancasterfoundation

Sophie

On 11th August 2007, 20-year-old Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were kicked, stamped on and left unconscious – for nothing more than looking different. Sophie later died from her injuries.

The Sophie Lancaster Foundation was set up by Sylvia Lancaster, a youth worker and Sophie’s mother, in her memory, and works to stamp out intolerance and discrimination in society. As a brand that promotes the right to experiment and self-express, Illamasqua is proud to support The Sophie Lancaster Foundation in its commitment to changing attitudes towards subcultures.

“Sylvia was recently awarded an OBE for her hard work to Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred & Intolerance Everywhere in her daughters name.”

The Foundation’s key aim is to change a mindset in society by working with young people in schools to create understanding and awareness of subcultures. Through the development of its eye-catching educational S.O.P.H.I.E. game and training with Sylvia Lancaster, Sophie’s mum, the Foundation is now helping teachers across the UK to educate a more tolerant and broad-minded generation of young people.

In tribute to Sophie, Illamasqua commissioned ‘Dark Angel’ in 2009 – a short film by award-winning French director, Fursy Teyssier, that’s a haunting rendition of Sophie’s story, featuring the music of iconic British band, Portishead. Please show your support.

What to Love About …….Spring 2017?

Well, as a Professional Makeup Artist & Beauty Blogger, quite a lot actually!.

For a start, NARS has added two delicious new Limited Edition “Duo Shadow” palettes to their range for Spring 2017

With 43 gorgeous colour pairings now available, Thessalonique (Iridescent Seashell Pink & Iridescent Violet Smoke) and Chiang Mai (Shimmering Sea Blue & Copper) really do help to put those dark winter months behind us.

Retailing at £25 from the Nars website, http://narscosmetics.co.uk free shipping starts from £50, with a choice of complimentary sample products depending on spend. Shipping is quite expensive at £7 for Standard and £9 for Express for orders under £50, so definitely worth trying to source in store if you’re spending less or can’t double up with a friend. As a guide, I ordered online on a Sunday evening and my eagerly anticipated package was delivered in to my hands on Wednesday.

As I’m currently packing to go travelling in Thailand (tomorrow ?) I couldn’t overlook the coincidence of Chiang Mai being it’s 2nd largest city. As good a reason as any to make this my review choice and get me in the holiday mood.

As with the other Duos in this range, Chiang Mai doesn’t disappoint. Marketed as being long wearing and crease resistant, the powders are very highly pigmented and true to word, don’t budge or crease all day.

Don’t be put off by the unusual colour combinations. Obviously, you can wear the shades individually, but what’s the fun in that?

The teal blue is shimmering and sheer, almost opaque on a light application and much more wearable that you might think. Sweep this shade subtly across the lid and smudge under the eye and use the copper in the crease for a daytime look that’s both modern and different. The texture feels gorgeous and they’re super blendable.

For a more dramatic result, vamp it up by applying in layers with a slightly damp brush for a much stronger intensity and to give a really intense burst of colour to compliment a dark, smoky eye.

What to Love About ……. A Legend!

As a Professional Makeup Artist, Spring reviews would definitely be missing a gargantuan something, if I were to overlook one of my all-time favourite brands, the iconic SMASHBOX.

Smashbox Studios was founded in 1990 by Dean & Davis Factor (Davis, a renowned photographer), great grandsons of Hollywood makeup legend Max Factor.

Spawned from these early photographic roots, the Smashbox Cosmetics brand was launched 6 years later, bringing products tested under intense studio conditions in to the home. There’s no denying, that for a photographer, having to stop for makeup touch-ups on Set is a big headache, so the Smashbox objective has always been to develop products that stay on and look amazing in both studio conditions and outside in the sunlight……well, that’s what we all want, right?

So, do they live up to their own hype? Consistently excellent market, consumer and blogger reviews, would suggest a resounding yes!

A purveyor of some of the best products on the Market, it’s been hard to limit myself to just one Smashbox product to test, so I’ve decided on two high profile launches for Spring 2017; their new BE LEGENDARY LIPSTICK PALETTES in both Matte …… and Cream!

Retailing at £55 each, with free standard delivery, I ordered online from Smashbox UK http://www.smashbox.co.uk on Thursday evening and my palettes arrived the following Tuesday.

Aesthetically, they are gorgeous. Sleek black palettes, with large mirrors and 25 shades in each. You really feel you’ve purchased something special; just opening the palette raises expectations.

So, what’s inside? Here’s a concise résumé of the Smashbox description…….

Collectible palettes, each containing 25 lipsticks that include some of their most beloved matte and creamy shades of Be Legendary lipstick. A blend of intense pigments and luxurious emollients saturate lips with brilliant colour that stays put and feels feather-light. Every hue is shade-tested in Smashbox Studios L.A. to ensure that the colour stays true in photographs and stays put from call time to the last cover shot. The moisturising satin-smooth creams soften and protect with Shea Butter and vitamins C and E and the Silky vitamin-fortified mattes with super staying power won’t settle unevenly on the lips or dry out.

As a professional Makeup Artist, any product needs to prove its metal to earn valuable space in my kit bag. Several factors are key to usefulness in a lip palette and pretty packaging, though important, isn’t top of my list. In the main I’m interested in, How it looks? How it feels? How it lasts?

Both palettes contain an extensive and eclectic colour range and popularity of the individual lipsticks is testimony to their desirability. Lush vibrant reds, corals, pinks, plums, violets, as well as neutrals, browns and nudes. Twenty five of the most popular colours from their 120 strong, Be Legendary range. As an artist, I need to be able to blend and mix; to create bespoke new colours. A palette needs the diversity and ability to translate the looks & colours I visualise in my mind and reproduce them in the home or studio. These palettes certainly have that flexibility. Want to recreate any Signature Lip Look? These palettes have it covered

Application is even and the finish creamy and comfortable; even the mattes don’t feel dry on the lips.

My verdict? There’s always been something very cool about Smashbox; maybe the links to those creative first L.A studio days in the nineties? Powerful pigments, with numerous lip shades achievable and a great range of nudes. Considering that the individual lipsticks retail at £17.50 each, it’s a great way to get your hands on all the range favourites.

As Smashbox might say, “Quite definitely, Lipstick Nirvana!”
